The Rolls Royce Ghost will be entering the 2013 model year with subtle and delicate enhancements, aimed at solidifying the Ghost’s place as a lavish and comfortable up-market experience.
The Rolls Royce design credo is based around the concept that the design and engineering of the Ghost should be so complex and intricate as to make every aspect of the car inviting and simple. As the Ghost’s chief designer Ian Cameron says:” Simplicity is the hardest design principle to follow”.
The full-size luxury car will be entering the 2013 model year with subtle and delicate enhancements, aimed at solidifying the Ghost’s place as a lavish and comfortable up-market experience – as opposed to just another fancy car.
Based on the Ghost Six Senses Concept car that was revealed only this year, the 2013 Ghost aspires to capture the richness of experience that Rolls Royce brings to the party. The 2013 Ghost was unveiled one of the most prestigious and exclusive motoring events in the world: the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. The new Ghost can be made to specifications as unique as the people who can afford the $250 000 price-tag (about R2.1-million) for the base model.
Even though the Ghost is the smallest car in the Rolls’ line-up, it’s still longer than other full-size sedans like the Mercedes Benz S-Class. And just because the Ghost is the baby in the family, its power shouldn’t be under-estimated. Under that sleek British hood of the Ghost rests a 3.6-litre twin-turbocharged direct-injection V12 dragon that roars out 563 hp (a whopping 110 more than the bigger Phantom). The Ghost cranks out 420 kW at 5250 rpm and 780Nm of torque. According to Rolls Royce the Ghost will dash from 0-100km/h in 4.9 seconds on its way to a regulated top speed of 250km/h. The Ghost’s engine is coupled to an eight-speed automatic gearbox that sends the power straight to the rear wheels.
The interior of the Ghost is exactly what one expects from Rolls Royce – opulent and luxurious. The cabin is fitted with soft leather, wooden trim and abundant technology. The updated features for the 2013 model include an upgraded audio system with new amplifiers and speakers in the headrest lining to “raise the centre of sound closer to the passengers’ ears”.
The Ghost will also feature ‘comfort access’ which allows one to open the boot with a lever located beneath the rear bumper, which means that you only need to use your foot. An endless amount of options are available on the Ghost, along with the ability to customize the paint and interior finishes with the Rolls Royce Bespoke Commission programme. Standard safety features comprise of dual front, front side and full-length side-curtain airbags along with traction and stability control systems. The Ghost also comes with an optional Driver’s Assistance Systems bundle that boasts a lane-departure warning system, automatic high beams, a head-up display and a night-vision camera.
The Ghost competes with the likes of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, the Porsche Panamera, the Maserati Quattroporte and the BMW 7-Series.
