Factory Warranties on cars in South Africa

When buying a car in South Africa, most of us are set on looking for a vehicle that will suit your needs, maybe something pretty, or fast.

If you are an avid camper and enjoying taking the old caravan on holiday you will need a decent tow car.

If you only require transport to and from work then something small and light is best suited for you.

Have a large family? Then an MPV or SUV would be needed.

At the end of the day, we all want security, a vehicle that won't give you endless problems, and a vehicle that comes with a decent manufacturer's warranty giving you peace of mind for the foreseeable future should be a top priority when browsing for your next set of wheels.

Let's have a look at some of the more popular brands here in South Africa for who offers what when it comes to factory warranties:

All Volkswagen passenger cars and light Commercial vehicles come with a 3 year / 120 000 km warranty which protects your vehicle against the failure of most mechanical and electrical components due to manufacturing defects.

Ford South Africa offers a standard manufacturers warrantee of 4 years / 120 000 km.

BMW South Africa offers a 5 year / 100 000 km motor plan which can be extended to a maximum of 7 years or 200 000 km.

Audi South Africa offers a Freeway Plan that covers you for a period of 5 years or 100 000 km.

Hyundai Automotive South Africa has announced that it will introduce a manufacturer's warranty of 7 years, or 200 000 km, on its vehicles, up from the 5 year / 150 000 km warranty introduced at the end of 2007.

Kia South Africa offers a 5 year/ 150 000 km warranty except for the deletion of the mileage restriction, but Kia Motors South Africa has further upgraded its standard Roadside Assistance programme from 3 years / unlimited mileage to 5 years / unlimited mileage.

Mercedes Benz South Africa offers a (PremiumDrive) Maintenance Plan option which includes:

  • Manufacturer's warranty 2 year / unlimited km
  • Maintenance Plan 5 year / 100 000 km with zero customer contribution
  • Roadside Assistance 5 year / 100 000 km
  • Touring Guarantee and Sign & Drive

As of the 1st September 2019, "Peugeot Pride" is offered across the entire Peugeot passenger car range and covers:

  • 5 – Year / 100 000 km: Warranty & Service plan across the range

MyCars.co.za handy tips to keep in mind -

  • Remember to keep your manufacturers warrantee valid by servicing your vehicle at the prescribed mileages, or every 12 months, whichever comes first.
  • When purchasing a new vehicle, make sure the dealership you decide to go with shows you in detail what is and what is not covered in your specific vehicles warrantee. Warrantees differ from manufacturer to manufacturer.
  • Adding performance parts to a vehicle will most likely void any warrantees, best to check with the agents before popping in that extra big turbo.
  • Extended warrantees can also be taken out adding further cover for when the manufacturers warrantee expires, do some homework to find the best extended option for your needs and pocket.
