According to Lexus, the 2013 updates to the LS model represent a significant revision in the LS’s long life span.
Back in August this year Lexus revealed their new LS model range comprising the LS 460, LS 600h as well as the LS 460 F Sport, the very first F Sport version of the leading Lexus LS model.
According to Lexus, the 2013 updates to the LS model represent a significant revision in the LS’s long life span. While still based on the fourth generation LS that has been in production since 2006, the 2013 component updates include three world firsts and 14 new features within the Lexus brand.
The LS’s exterior has undergone a dynamic redesign which includes the new distinctive signature spindle-like grille in at the LS’s front, as well as new bumpers at both ends of the car. All the lights on the Lexus incorporate LED technology, and the new vertical shape fog lights include the seamless L-shaped light tube daytime running lights. The new F Sport version of the LS also boasts larger 19-inch forged wheels and a 10mm lower ride height.
In order to create a more dynamic performance for the LS the car has been given more rigidity which produces a more comfortable ride without sacrificing handling ability. Under the hood the LS keeps a 4.6-litre V8 engine coupled to an 8-speed sequential shift automatic transmission. The rear-wheel model knocks out 288kW of power and 487Nm of torque and makes 0-100km/h in 5.4 seconds, while the all-wheel version’s engine produces 268kW and 470Nm, making the 0-100 sprint a bit longer at 5.9 seconds.
The LS 460 F Sport doesn’t feature any changes to the engine, but does benefit from sport-tuned air suspension as well as a Torsen limited slip diff and Brembo 6-piston calliper brakes. A super-sporty growl also issues from the F Sport due to the intake sound generator on the engine that intensifies the vibration of the intake pulse and makes itself heard in the car’s cabin.
The interior of the LS has been changed dramatically to keep in line with the GS’s styling. The centre cluster of controls and switches have been reduced to give a more compact feel, and the LS includes as standard a Mark Levinson audio system with surround sound. The new technology and safety features include the Lexus Climate Concierge System (a highly advanced climate control system that utilizes 13 sensors) as well as the Pre-Collision Safety System that monitors the movement of the driver’s head, and sets off an alarm should the driver’s head look away from the road for a certain amount of time. Also included is Lexus’ blind spot mirror and automatic high beams.
Recently at the 2012 SEMA Show in Las Vegas Lexus managed to impress audiences at the customisation show. Leading the charge was the new LS F Sport customised by the Five Axis Design Studio. Five Axis added more muscle and more dramatic styling to the F Sport, dressing it up in a full aero body kit, 22-inch custom-made wheels, Air Runner TC-5 air suspension and a matt silver paint finish with grey detailing.
Lexus’ goal with the updated LS sedan is to hold their competition at bay by modernizing the LS’ styling and keeping ahead of the game with technological gadgetry. Competing in the same market is the Audi A8, the BMW 7-series and the Mercedes Benz S-Class.
