Mahindra Looking to Take Over SA Market

07 Nov 2012

The Mahindra XUV500, which is becoming increasingly popular in South Africa, is now fitted as standard with fuel-saving micro-hybrid technology.
Mahindra is arguably one of South Africa’s fastest growing car brands, having been in operation in the country’s car market since 2004. According to an independent automotive research company recently tracked the growth of the car-maker’s brand and sales. The results stated that combined sales of both passenger vehicles and LCVs over the monitored period showed a growth of 124%. According to the same report next in line when it comes to sales growth is Jaguar, Kia and then Jeep in fourth place.
According to Mahindra South Africa’s CEI Ashok Thakur this is as a result of the introduction of new models like the XUV500 SUV as well as the release of special editions of existing models that have boosted the popularity of the brand. Mahindra has also made vast improvements within their dealership network to ensure efficient and improved availability and supply of parts and service.
15 new dealerships have been added this year alone to Mahindra’s 56-strong network in South Africa, and the automaker is hoping to double the sales figures this year from last year.
Aiding Mahindra’s quest to become South Africa’s fastest growing automotive brand is the fact that since the beginning of 2012 the company became the official distributor of Ssang Yong vehicles throughout African countries including South Africa, Botswana, Swaziland, Namibia and Mozambique.
Dealerships that are geared for the Ssang Yong brand are responsible for all factory warranty work on the vehicles and will have direct supply from the Ssang Yong parts housed at the Mahindra factory in Johannesburg. Mahindra is also introducing newer and updated Ssang Yong models to the South African market in order to reposition the brand within the local automotive market.
